Community + Art: I believe that working towards a common cause while creating artworks together, not only builds connections across diverse communities, but transforms environments and attitudes.
visual identity
Through Precita Eyes, I worked with a small crew of women artists to design and create a mural in the Mission District of San Francisco. Tasked with creating an artwork that represented the diverse community, our team used a human centered design approach to research, interview, brainstorm, and ultimately paint a mural that illustrates the complexities and many layers of our beloved Mission community.
transforming spaces
ArtSpan put out the call for volunteers in the production of a new mural, and I jumped in! Working alongside professional artists from all backgrounds, we drew and painted the "Bird Song" mural (designed by artist Joshua Coffey) on the side of a four story building, transforming a forlorn, industrial corner to a visual cacophony of music and color.
Building COnnections
With the Global Mosaic Project, I went to Haiti with artist Laurel True to work alongside the young artists from the Art Creation Foundation For Children to create a beautiful mosaic mural in the recovering city of Jacmel. Although I don't speak French or Haitian Creole, we all spoke the international language of the arts--laughing, sharing, and teaching one another, as piece by piece, we forged a beautiful wall of friendship.
